Climate-Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean

The PhD student will develop a strong research profile in the context of evaluating data from the new tracer release experiments (POSTRE) and analyse the TRE modelling efforts within the SFB (in cooperation with A2 and B1). The goal is to better quantify the benthic-pelagic coupling of the Peru upwelling system and the ESTP OMZ. Additional research is possible on more extensive analysis of the two Atlantic tracer release experiments (GUTRE and OSTRE) with a focus on lateral eddy and jet oxygen fluxes using observations and models.

It is expected that the candidate will participate in sea-going expeditions in support of the tracer measurement team and analyze the results in the context of other oceanographic observations. The candidate is expected to critically exam data from the expeditions and to evaluate these also in the context of existing SFB models in order to improve quantification of the horizontal mixing in the oxygen minimum zone of the northeastern tropical Atlantic, and quantify dispersion of a released tracer on the Peruvian shelf. The PhD project is part of the collaborative research centre SFB754 and more information about the project is provided here: http://www.sfb754.de/.

Anforderungen
A qualification comparable to a Master's degree or Diploma in chemistry, physics or related field is required. A background in marine research is desirable and strong quantitative skills in data processing and analysis is essential. Additional experience in analytical chemistry and / or observational physical oceanography is desirable. We also expect very good written and oral English language skills, and that the candidate is willing and able to participate in sea-going expeditions with durations of several weeks. The candidate is expected to enroll and actively participate in the Integrates School of Ocean Science (ISOS) PhD program, http://www.ozean-der-zukunft.de/isos/
