PhD Position: Directed Energy Transfer in Luminescent Coordination Networks

KIT is one of the biggest research institutions worldwide and has access to state-of-the art research facilities resulting from the merger of the National Research Centre of the Helmholtz Association and the former Technical University. The “Nanophotonics for Energy” department was established in 2014 within the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT) and the Light Technology Institute (LTI). As a PhD candidate you will be responsible to work on a research project within a newly established collaborative programme COORNET (http://www.coornets-spp.de/). This particular project will be realized in cooperation with Prof. Michael Seitz at the University of Tübingen.

The topic of the PhD project is “Directed Energy Transfer in Luminescent Coordination Networks”. Lanthanide-based, heterometallic coordination networks (COORNETs) with non-statistical metal distribution are attractive model system to study the crucially important metal-to-metal energy transfer and its impact on the photophysical properties (e.g. up-conversion photoluminescence) because only these materials can provide both exquisit stereocontrol of the photoactive lanthanides, as well as the possibility for long-range energy migration. This project aims at alleviating this situation by developing synthetic access to such lanthanide-based COORNETs and by laying the experimental and theoretical foundations for a comprehensive understanding of metal-to-metal energy transfer involving lanthanides.

This field of research covers encompasses:
• Synthesis of metal organic coordination networks
• Establishing and refining techniques for measurement of photoluminescent quantum yields (PLQY) as well as photoluminescence lifetimes across the entire
ultraviolet-visible-near infrared wavelength range
• Extensive optical and spectroscopic characterisation of lanthanide materials
• Determination energy transfer mechanisms between sensitizer and emitter Ions
• Understanding the role of defects in quenching of the photoluminescence
