Oncogenic signaling pathways of colorectal/pancreatic cancer

We encourage highly motivated and qualified students to apply for a position in the department of "Oncogenic signaling pathways of colorectal/pancreatic cancer" at the DKTK partner site located at the Institute of Pathology, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU). The research project will be in the study of cancer-relevant signaling pathways triggered by interaction of patient-derived pre-cancerous and cancerous cells with the stromal and immune component of the disease microenvironment. Specifically, the group will develop advanced 3-D co-culture systems (human tumor organoids) and apply state-of-the-art techniques (e.g. Multicolor Flow-Cytometry, Pico-Profiling, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing, transcriptome and proteome/secretome analyses) in order to identify and functionally characterize candidate targets suitable for therapeutic intervention. After selection and validation of inhibitory antibodies or small molecule drugs, a profound characterization of these compounds will be undertaken via biochemical/cell biological assays and tumor mouse models.

The successful candidate will work at the interface between molecular oncology and medical science and will acquire substantial experience in 2-D/3-D tissue culture techniques, work with primary patient samples, analyses of intra- and inter-cellular signal transduction, and in the hierarchical composition of tumors. Besides this, experience will be gained in statistical tools and usage of databases from cancer genomics projects which facilitate selection of candidate targets with prognostic and/or therapeutic relevance in cancer disease.
