Helical Computed Tomography in Materials Analysis and Life Sciences
The ANKA Synchrotron Radiation Facility at KIT operates one of the most advanced research computed tomography (CT) scanners worldwide. One of the limitations of such a cone beam CT scanner is the reduction of image contrast by those x-rays that are scattered instead of absorbed by the object under investigation. This can be largely avoided by collimating the x-rays to achieve a fan beam geometry. However, the resulting smaller field-of-view normally implies increased image acquisition times, which can be counteracted by scanning the object on a helical trajectory. We are currently looking for a highly motivated Master’s student to study differences among the two scanning concepts. Your task will be to quantify x-ray scatter and other image artifacts found in both cone beam and helical fan beam CT images, depending on the sample geometry. Ultimately, you will investigate which sample properties favor or discourage using either method, and quantify your findings studying cases from materials science and biology.
We offer you:
• the possibility to learn about cone and fan beam computed tomography from scratch;
• the chance to work with spectroscopic x-ray detectors and unconventional samples such as tree trunks;
• the opportunity to implement your methods also for other, novel x-ray imaging techniques such as differential phase contrast and dark field tomography;
• a ready-to-use and highly competitive laboratory setup;
• to teach you solving problems using modern methods from mathematical optimization, statistics, image processing and machine learning;
• close supervision in an experienced team; and
• the possibility to publish your excellent results in a scientific journal or present them at international conferences.
