Image Processing in Grating-Interferometric X-Ray Imaging
The ANKA Synchrotron Radiation Facility at KIT operates one of the most advanced research computed tomography (CT) scanners worldwide. Based on an x-ray tube, it not only delivers conventional absorption images, but also measures the x-ray refraction and small angle scattering occurring in a sample. Providing complementary contrasts, these novel imaging modalities are based on an interferometer that makes use of sophisticated phase and absorption gratings with periods in the micrometer-range. Imperfections in these gratings, along with residual vibrations in our system, sometimes introduce artefacts in the resulting images. Therefore, we are currently looking for a highly motivated Master’s student to work on artefact reduction using advanced methods from image processing. Your task will be to adapt image formation models from spatial statistics to grating interferometry, and to quantify the improvement in image quality they can achieve. Furthermore, you will investigate potential benefits in image acquisition times and radiation dose, and demonstrate your results using samples from materials science and biology.
We offer you:
• the possibility to choose one of the hot topics in x-ray imaging for your Master’s thesis;
• a ready-to-use and highly competitive laboratory setup;
• to teach you solving problems using modern methods from mathematical optimization, statistics, image processing and machine learning;
• close supervision in an experienced team; and
• the possibility to publish your excellent results in a scientific journal or present them at international conferences.
