Cone Beam Computed Laminography

The ANKA Synchrotron Radiation Facility at KIT operates one of the most advanced research computed tomography (CT) scanners worldwide. A well-known limitation of state-of-the-art CT scanners is their inability to investigate flat, extended and strongly absorbing objects. At synchrotron beamlines, we have developed a method called computed laminography that does not suffer from these limitations. To make this method more accessible, we now aim to transfer it to our CT scanner, which does not require synchrotron radiation, but relies on a microfocus x-ray tube, and which employs a cone beam, rather than parallel beam geometry. We are currently looking for a highly motivated Master’s student to study this x-ray imaging modality in our lab. Your task will be to determine the accuracy of our scanner, and to investigate and quantify the influence of image artifacts inherent to laminography. Working with samples from diverse fields such as materials science, microelectronics and paleontology, you will identify cases and sample characteristics for which this new method excels conventional CT.
We offer you
• the possibility to learn about cone beam computed tomography and laminography from scratch;
• a ready-to-use and highly competitive laboratory setup;
• to teach you solving problems using modern methods from mathematical optimization, statistics, image processing and machine learning;
• close supervision in an experienced team; and
• the possibility to publish your excellent results in a scientific journal or present them at international conferences.
