PhD Position: Modelling and simulation approaches for nuclear analyses of a DEMO fusion power plant using the Monte Carlo code toolkit GEANT4
The aim of the PhD work is to extend and qualify the Monte Carlo toolkit GEANT-4, originally developed for the particle transport simulation in high energy physics, for nuclear design calculations of fusion power reactors. This requires the successful validation against benchmark experiments, proven capabilities to represent the DEMO geometry and the plasma neutron source, and the integration into a design computation scheme for performing coupled radiation transport/activation calculations and providing heating distribution data for thermal and structural mechanics analyses. The PhD thesis will enhance and validate the toolkit to this end and demonstrate such capabilities on the example of a demonstration power plant (DEMO) which is being developed in the frame of the EUROfusion Power Plant Physics and Technology (PPPT) programme.

- We seek applications from qualified scientists (f/m) holding a master degree (or diploma) in physics, mathematics, or mechanical engineering. Knowledge is assumed in the field of nuclear/neutron physics and/or particle physics and the Monte Carlo particle transport simulation technique. The candidate’s capabilities include knowledge of modern operating systems (Linux), programming languages (C++) and software techniques. Fluency in written and spoken English are essential. Basic knowledge of fusion technology is considered as an asset.
