Flexible Data Sharing for Research Data

The Large Scale Data Facility (LSDF) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is a major centre for handling and long-term storage of large-scale experimental data in Europe. In order to allow scientists from various disciplines to store their data easily, a repository system called KIT Data Manager has been set up. This system is designed for managing large-scale experimental data in science and can be seamlessly integrated into scientific workflows. Internally, various kinds of metadata support e.g. data retrieval, content preservation and curation. Apart from pure data and metadata management KIT Data Manager aims to enable science across institute and even disciplinary borders. Therefore, flexible ways for data sharing must be elaborated. On the respository system-level sharing is rather solved. There, a fine-grained access control model based on users and groups enables sharing. The challenge of this project is to elaborate ways on how sharing on the repository system-level can be brought together with high- performance data access on file system-level aside institute and site borders.

Goal:
• Collection of requirements and use cases for relevant data sharing scenarios
• Elaboration of possible methods to link repository and file system access control
• Selection of one appropriate method for a prototype implementation
• Evaluation of the prototype with regards to the collected requirements and use cases
• Documentation of developed software and evaluation results

Experience gained: novel methods for data sharing, big data, and repository systems
