PhD Student - Medicinal Chemistry: Developing chimeric inhibitors based on bi-specific peptide-small molecule conjugates for clinical translation as therapeutic anticancer agents

As part of the German/Israeli funded DKFZ-MOST program, this is a collaborative project to develop chimeric peptide/small molecule conjugates as highly specific targeted anti-cancer agents. The project in the DKFZ group will be the discovery and medicinal chemistry optimization of small molecule inhibitors of an enzyme recently implicated to play an important role in the metastasis of melanomas. In cooperation with our Israeli partners, these small molecules will be chemically coupled to evolved peptide inhibitors and tested in cellular, as well as animal cancer models. The successful candidate will, first and foremost, develop strong skills in synthetic organic chemistry (planning, execution, optimization, and analysis of multi-step reaction sequences). At the same time, the candidate will learn the principles of medicinal chemistry and will become an expert on inhibitors of the specifically targeted enzyme class. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to perform relevant enzymatic and functional cellular assays and travel to Israel (once per year) for collaborative work.
