The DZNE is a center of excellence within the Helmholtz Association that performs translational research on Neurodegenerative Diseases. The center includes nine high-performing sites in Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Göttingen, Magdeburg, Munich, Rostock/Greifswald, Tübingen and Witten.

The research group “Ubiquitin signalling”, Dr. Meike Broemer, at the DZNE Bonn, is looking for a highly motivated

PhD student (f/m) – Code 1246/2014/10

The aim of the lab is to improve current understanding of how Ubiquitin and Ubiquitin-like proteins contribute to prevention and pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. We are using a synergistic approach to address how the conjugation and de-conjugation of Ub and UBL proteins modulates cellular processes. The successful candidate will characterise a human de-ubiquitylating enzyme and elucidate the functional consequence of a disease-related mutation. For this, we will use a combination of biochemical assays, proteomic approaches, mammalian cell culture, followed by a potential in vivo validation of the identified mechanisms.

Anforderungen

Successful candidates must have a strong background in molecular biology and biochemistry. The ability to work independently and design and interpret experiments is essential, together with excellent organisational skills and fluency in English. We are looking for a team- and goal-oriented personality who wants to work in a young and international team. PhD students will be encouraged to present data at internal and external meetings and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
